Project Description

TPE Consulting Engineers are working as Project Managers for the integrated engineering and project management team for the development of the Kilronan Harbour, Inis Mór, Aran Islands, Co. Galway.  Inis Mór is the largest of the three islands with an area of approximately 40 sq km.  It is the main town on the island and incorporates the principal harbour of the three islands, which is by far the most important entry point for islanders, tourists and goods.

Marine, Civil and Structural Engineering

  • Construction of a 550m breakwater to provide shelter to the harbour from significant swell waves from Galway harbour
  • The extension and upgrading of the existing pier to facilitate larger vessels
  • The creation of a deepwater berth for fishing boats
  • Provision of a cargo quay and slipway to service roll-on roll-off (RO-RO) cargo services
  • Provision of a pedestrian only zone for ferry passengers
  • A berth for the lifeboat

These improvements to the pier and harbour area will allow for an increase in the numbers of ferries and boats that can use the harbour.  Larger ferries will be able to access the harbour which will allow for a better all year round service.  Larger and faster ferries may also travel the longer crossing from Galway harbour, giving a direct and convenient connection to Galway city. TPE Consulting Engineers started work in this project in 2000 commissioned by Galway County Council to carry out a feasibility study for the proposed development.

We have continued to work with Galway County Council through all phases of the project, which is currently in construction phase.  The expected completion date for this project is Autumn 2009.
