|St. John's Hospital, Wexford|
This 100-bed hospital for the elderly replaces the previous County Home, and is a new facility providing front line services in the therapies on a Day Basis and In-Patient services for Rehabilitation, Alzheimer’s, Extended Care and Intermediate Care.
The facility also includes a special integrated provision for Alzheimer patients and a special unit for young dependent adults. It was constructed in two phases and required special measures to reduce the threat of aspergillus during the works.
TPE Consulting Engineers Services
TPE Consulting Engineers provided the full rang of Civil and Structural Engineering services on the project as well as providing resident engineering for both phases of the works. The design philosophy centred around providing a durable, low maintenance, state of the art medical facility that also maintained as non-institutional atmosphere as possible. This was desirable as many of the patients remained for long periods of time and came to look on the hospital as their home.
A single storey solution was deemed to be the most appropriate given the reduced mobility of the end-users and natural materials were introduced where possible. The building was set out on a gentle horizontal curve which maximised the views over the surrounding countryside and enhanced the patient’s connection with nature.
The development was the first of a number to be carried out on the site and services were master-planned to ensure that the potential of the site was maintained. The hospital was followed by a new building which will serve as the Millbrook Severe and profound Disabilities Day Centre.
