Civil and Structural Engineering

The building scheme consists of four separate buildings all tied together to form the hospital. Two of these, an existing steel-framed office building, and a concrete-framed office building, had to be re-engineered for hospital use. The other two blocks were completely new build. A further design constraint included a confined site that is bound by public roads on two sides, and by existing buildings on the other sides.

The site is underlain with granite rock that was excavated for up to three levels of basement in areas. The Linear Accelerator bunkers, with walls and a roof measuring up to 2.4m thick, are in the lowest basement level. The structure of the building comprised of a concrete flat slab. The façade consists of precast concrete cladding units, and extensive curtain wall glazing. .

Overview

Our involvement from the early stages of the project allowed us to work with the design team to provide innovative solutions to ensure that the two-year programme to deliver a fully working high specification hospital could be achieved.  Value engineering solutions were implemented and led to significantly reduced costs to the Client including the selection of materials to fast-track the programme without compromising on quality standards. Throughout this project, our Project Team worked in tandem with the Hospital Operator, the Client and the Main Contractor to ensure that the Beacon Hospital was delivered on time and within budget, to the most stringent international quality standards.
